Diary of a Dessert Addict

I have a confession — I LOVE dessert. I always have and I most likely always will. My favorite dessert is a hot fudge brownie sundae with whipped cream and, of course, a cherry on top. So the idea of a three week sugar cleanse was terrifying! I literally could not recall the last time I went without eating dessert for just two days, let alone weeks — but I did it anyway. And even though I didn’t last the full three weeks, I still learned some valuable lessons.

  • I can actually not eat sugar and feel OK — and even happy!
  • I had a lot less emotional stress related to food during my cleanse. I didn’t have the emotional hangover I usually have after eating something I knew had no nutritional value and THAT was the best for me. Usually I can easily allow myself to eat an additional cookie or maybe have a bigger piece of pie than necessary, but knowing that wasn’t an option during the cleanse really freed me to focus on healthier decisions.  It also gave me space to realize I wasn’t even hungry the majority of the time.
  • Thinking about how to eat healthy all day, each day took a lot of planning and energy. I still haven’t figured out a good solution — it’s so much easier to not spend 3 hours in the kitchen on the weekend — but I know if this is a path I want to continue on, I need to find the time to do so.

After all is said and done, I still eat dessert, but now I know I am in control and the dessert does not have control over me.
