NurseLine Health Tips for Colorado's Cold Weather Months

The weather in Colorado has a mind of its own! We live in a magnificent state with many places to explore throughout the year. Whether you just moved here or have been here for years, we all need to prepare for fall and winter weather in Colorado. It’s commonly said, “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 10 minutes”. The weather can change without warning. We can experience two or three seasons in just 24 hours.

Healthy Habits for Fall and Winter Months

  • Dress inappropriately for the weather to prevent getting too cold or too hot and protect your immune system. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to temperature changes.
  • The dry Colorado climate paired with high elevation can cause dehydration. Drinking lots of water will help maintain hydration as well as minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
  • When hiking or doing outdoor activities, start off low and slow to prevent injury. Work up to more strenuous activities by conditioning.
  • Keep coats, hats, gloves and water in the car to prepare for winter driving conditions.
  • Maintain air quality indoors during cold weather months by changing furnace filters on schedule.
  • Hand hygiene year-round is important as well as covering mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing.
