Colorado Sunshine: Essential Summer Tips

Summer in Colorado means sunshine, mountain adventures, and time well spent with family, friends, and pets. Whether you're hiking, biking, or just soaking in the scenery, it’s important to stay safe while enjoying the great outdoors. Follow these essential tips to help keep your summer fun and worry-free.

CHECK: Be Weather-Wise

Before heading out, always check the weather forecast. Colorado weather can change quickly—what starts as a sunny morning can shift into afternoon thunderstorms, hail, or even tornadoes.

Pack smart:

  • A fully charged cell phone
  • Lightweight rain gear
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • A mental note (or map) of nearby shelter options

APPLY: Protect Your Skin

That high-altitude sunshine is no joke—Colorado has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the country. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it 20 minutes before going outside and reapply regularly, especially if you're sweating or in water. Don’t forget your ears, neck, and the back of your hands!

DRINK: Stay Hydrated

At high altitudes and in our dry climate, your body loses moisture faster than you may realize. Aim for daily water intake of:

  • 100 oz for men
  • 75 oz for women

When you're active, drink even more. Consider adding electrolytes to help your body absorb fluids more efficiently. And if your dog is along for the ride, pack extra water for them too!

PACK: Be Prepared

Whether you're out for a walk or heading into the backcountry, a little preparation goes a long way.

Essentials to bring:

  • A basic first aid kit (bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, anti-itch cream)
  • Bug spray (apply after sunscreen)
  • Dog waste bags—pack it in, pack it out
